How To Recover Soft Mods On Xbox Softmod

Original Xbox fragging I can hear a clicking sound from the hard drive so I think that’s the issue... if I just replace it with another one... can I do that? Also how can I softmod it if it won’t load up o just need to u lock the HDD and switch it with a bigger one

So I have used this splinter cell game and game saves to soft mod 2 other xbox's. When I tried on a friend's, I go to start game and chose the Linux game save and it goes to next page but doesn't run softmod software.
