Four years ago, a disaster planning project called "Hurricane Phoenix" imagined what the worst-case scenario would be for a hurricane hitting Tampa. The result looks a lot like some of the forecasts for the region as Hurricane Milton approaches.

Two weeks ago, Hurricane Helene “spared” the Tampa Bay region a direct hit and yet storm surge still caused catastrophic damage, flooding homes, drowning people who decided to stay near the coast and leaving massive piles of debris that still sit along roadsides.

Four people attempting to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton were injured Tuesday morning after the small airplane they were on crashed into Tampa Bay. Officials said three people onboard the Piper Cherokee aircraft were hospitalized after the incident, which occurred near St. Petersburg’s Albert Whitted Airport at around 10:52 a.m.
