Detroit says it will soon become the largest U.S. city to accept crypto as a form of payment for city fees and taxes. Starting in 2025, the city will use PayPal to facilitate payments from residents opting to use Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.

Detroiters will soon be able to pay their taxes and other city fees with crypto through PayPal, according to a Thursday announcement from Detroit’s Office of the Treasury.

Detroit has announced plans to accept cryptocurrency tax payments through PayPal starting in mid-2025, becoming the largest US city to adopt digital currency for municipal payments while implementing automatic conversion to US dollars to manage volatility risks.

Detroit will begin accepting cryptocurrencies for city fees and taxes, becoming the largest U.S. city so far to do so, says a statement from Mayor Mike Duggan. Only Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana accept cryptocurrency for state payments, the statement notes.

Detroit residents will be able to pay with popular cryptos like Bitcoin and Ethereum through a PayPal-managed platform.
