Jimmy Carter made a final trip home to Plains, to be buried near the modest house he shared with his wife Rosalynn for more than six decades.

Jimmy Carter was celebrated Thursday for his personal humility and public service before, during and after his presidency in a funeral at Washington National Cathedral featuring the kind of pageantry the 39th U.

Former President Jimmy Carter will be laid to rest in his hometown of Plains, Georgia on Thursday night. He will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, outside the home they lived in for decades.

Carter’s body arrived for a second, more intimate service at Maranatha Baptist Church late Thursday afternoon, a small congregation on the outskirts of Plains, Georgia, where he long taught Sunday school.

For what he gave me, he deserves my respect,” said Tiffany Patten. “If he can eradicate guinea worm, I can stand in 30-degree weather (to watch his funeral’s motorcade).”
