Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm, is churning toward Florida’s west coast. The Tampa Bay area, home to more than 3.3 million people, is facing the possibility of widespread destruction after avoiding direct hits from major hurricanes for more than a century.

As South Florida expects periods of heavy rain on Sunday and Hurricane Milton strengthens, some areas are already seeing flooding, especially Broward County.

The current forecast calls for the storm to strengthen to a high-end Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches Florida, with 110 mph sustained winds. A Category 3 isn’t out of the question, as the initial forecast is on the cusp of category 3, and forecasters wrote that “some upward adjustments may be required.”
