New York State Police have launched a criminal probe into a trooper who claimed he was shot and wounded by an unknown gunman on a Long Island highway last week.

The investigation into Thomas Mascia's conduct is "far from over" as investigators continue to piece together what happened, an official said.

On October 30, at about 11:45 p.m., a shooting occurred on the Southern State Parkway westbound in the area of Exit 17, West Hempstead Nassau County, between a New York State Trooper and suspect who fled the scene. The Trooper was wounded and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation, along with their internal one, in the case of a now-suspended New York State trooper who said he was shot by a suspect on Long Island's Southern State Parkway last week.
