As the sun set over Sacramento on Tuesday night, candles were lit and a message was lifted. January 7 marks two years since the brutal police beating death of Sacramento native Tyre Nichols, 29, captured the nation and sparked protests across the country demanding justice and police reform.

Jan. 7 marks two years since the death of Tyre Nichols, who sat days in the hospital after suffering a brutal beating at the hands of now five former Memphis Police officers.

The family of Tyre Nichols, Councilmember Lisa Kaplan, and the Sacramento chapter of the NAACP are holding a vigil Tuesday to commemorate Nichol’s life, Kaplan’s office said. Nichols, who grew up in Sacramento,

Members of Tyre Nichols’ family, community members, activists and faith leaders came together to march on the second anniversary of Nichols’ death. “We are getting stronger, but we’re not there,” Nichols’ father Rodney Wells said.

Participants are encouraged to bring candles to light the way forward and honor Nichols’ legacy on Tuesday, Jan 7.

Ahead of Tuesday's march in honor of Tyre Nichols, his sister Keyana Dixon spoke to the crowd to share her appreciation for the community's continued support of her family.
