Back in May, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda took part in a multi–pathway workshop, signaling their commitment to developing new engines for an automotive landscape focused on electrification and reaching carbon neutrality.

Mazda has confirmed plans for a next-gen CX-5 and it will use an all-new hybrid powertrain that was developed in-house. The redesigned crossover will have a streamlined lineup as the automaker is seeking to reduce costs and complexity.

It will still continue development of internal-combustion engines, though, including both conventional piston engines and rotaries.

I don’t think anyone can dispute that Mazda is for the people. That it keeps the Miata humble and therefore objectively great is all I need to defend my case, but there’s also the fact that the automaker loves experimenting with gas engines.
