President Jimmy Carter was honored with two funeral services in Washington and Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 9, before his private hometown burial in Plains. The national day of mourning brought together all five living U.

Carter, who has rarely used his full name — James Earl Carter Jr, was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. Gerald Ford, the Michigan native who was the 38th president after succeeding Richard Nixon, who had resigned the post, died Dec. 26, 2006. At the time of his death he was the longest-living president at age 93.

A national funeral service was held for former President Jimmy Carter at Washington National Cathedral this morning, marking the conclusion of his state funeral. Remembrance ceremonies included his lying in repose in his home state, Georgia, and later lying in state at the U.S. Capitol.
