West Nile virus is not contagious between people because humans are dead-end hosts, which means they don't pass on the virus. There is a median of about 2,200 cases of the virus in the U.S. every year, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Health and environmental officials are warning Rhode Islanders that the risk of mosquito-borne diseases remains high statewide.

New Jersey health officials report that three residents have died from West Nile virus, with the total of human cases reported this season in the state rising to 16. The three people who died were from Cumberland, Mercer, and Middlesex counties, according to the New Jersey Department of Health’s latest update on mosquito-borne illnesses.

Another local county has identified a positive case of West Nile virus in mosquitoes. The Vermilion County Health Department announced that a batch of mosquitoes had tested positive for the virus. The infected batch was collected near Westville,

The town said the dead crow was found in Gray on Sept. 1, but that it's an isolated incident in the community.

The agency said that additional monitoring will be done in the area where these mosquito samples were collected and control work will be conducted, depending on the number and types of mosquitoes that are found.
