Intense monsoon storms battered India on Monday, flooding parts of the financial capital Mumbai, while lightning in the eastern state of Bihar killed at least 10 people, government officials said.

India's overhaul of its decades-old criminal justice system has come under criticism from some lawyers and activists who say the changes could increase police powers over citizens and increase case backlogs in an overworked system.

Indian lawyers and activists are urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to put on hold three sets of new criminal laws, arguing they will increase litigation in an already overburdened justice system and give excessive powers to police.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who spearheaded the new laws, stated that the primary objective is to deliver justice rather than focus solely on penal actions, unlike the colonial-era laws. "These laws are made by Indians, for Indians, and by an Indian Parliament, marking the end of colonial criminal justice laws," he said.

Abhishek Sharma scored his first Twenty20 century as India crushed Zimbabwe by 100 runs in the second T20 on Sunday to level the five-match series at 1-1.
