Jason Sponseller/Shutterstock Out with the old, in with the new as they say. Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that it's making a major name change to its tallest peak. Clingmans Dome will now be called Kuwohi.

The peak became known as Clingmans Dome following an 1859 survey by geographer Arnold Guyot, who named it for Thomas Lanier Clingman, a Confederate Brigadier General as well as a lawyer, US Representative and Senator from North Carolina, according to the park.

The U.S. Board of Geographic Names on Wednesday voted to change the name of the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park from Clingmans Dome to Kuwohi, a Cherokee name for the mountain.
